MANDRILL - The Best Of - 1974

Mandrill is a funk band formed in Brooklyn, New York City in 1968. The band was formed by three brothers: Carlos Wilson (trombone, vocals), Lou Wilson (trumpet, vocals) and Ric Wilson (sax, vocals). The brothers were born in Panama and grew up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn. Other members of the band included Bundy Cenac (Bass), Neftali Santiago (drums, percussion, vocals), Juaquin Jessup (lead guitar, percussion, vocals), Charles Padro (drums), Claude 'Coffee' Cave II (keyboards, percussion, vocals) and Fudgy Key (bass) and Omar Mesa (Guitar).
Parts of their songs had been sampled by many hip-hop acts such as Public Enemy, Shawty Lo, Big L, Kanye West and Jin. Beneath funk they combine many other styles like latin, salsa, rock, blues and soul to create their own colourful style.
Some of their songs have been used in the soundtracks of a couple of movies: The Greatest (1977) directed by Tom Gries and Monte Hellman; and The Warriors (1979) directed by Walter Hill. The band continues to perform live; their signature song is arguably "Fencewalk."

War, originally called Eric Burdon & War and often typeset as WAR, is an american funk band from California, known for the hit songs "Low Rider", "Spill the Wine", "The Cisco Kid" and "Why Can't We Be Friends?". Formed in 1969, War was a musical crossover band which fused elements of rock, funk, jazz, Latin music, R&B, and reggae. The band also transcended racial and cultural barriers with a multi-ethnic line-up. The year was 1969, and the band had the nerve to carry the name War at a time when peace was the slogan in an anti-Vietnam War America. Founder and singer/keyboardist Lonnie Jordan claimed that the band's goal was to spread a message of brotherhood and harmony, using instruments and voices to speak out against racism, hunger, gangs, crimes, and turf wars, and promote hope and the spirit of brotherhood. Eric Burdon & War began playing live shows to audiences throughout Southern California before entering into the studio to record their debut album Eric Burdon Declares "War". The album's key track, the erotic, spaced-out, Latin-flavored "Spill the Wine", was a hit and launched the band's career. The band has sold over 50 million records to date. Although War's lyrics are often socio-political in nature, their music usually had a laid-back, California funk vibe.
The War's music has been sampled and recorded by many singers and groups, ranging from R&B/pop singers to nu metal band and hip-hop groups.

Fred Wesley and the J.B.'s - Damn Right I Am Somebody (1974)

An incredible album. The set starts with a wonderful conversational bit, rapping and musing on the idea of "Damn Right, I Am Somebody", showing the group in a political and righteous mode for the first time ever. The grooves then kick in with the same heavy funk as on earlier records, but also a nice nod towards experimental production from strange fade ups and fade downs, to stark time and rhythm changes, and even bits of electronics used to create some very cool moments in the grooves! The whole thing's as dead funky as can be, and is stuffed with insane classics like "Blow Your Head", "Same Beat", "Damn Right I am Somebody", "I'm Payin' Taxes, What am I Buyin'", and a great cover of Marvin Gaye's "You Sure Love to Ball"! Get up and groove!

Som Três - Som Três Show (1968)

You won't find a groovier group than Som Tres and if you need proof, check out this fantastic album! The group were a post-bossa trio led by pianist Cesar Camargo Mariano and they grooved with a sound that started with the core piano trio sound of the bossa age, but which was also expanded a lot with late 60s orchestrations. The result is an incredibly strong batch of tunes that groove from the get-go and which soar along the best baroque lines of the Blue Brazil generation. The whole album's great with some light vocals, and lots of cool instrumentals.

The Brand New Heavies - Trunk Funk: The Best of BNH (1999)

18 of their best recordings from the legendary acid jazz group that started their career as part of the Talkin' Loud label family.
The Heavies are solidly rooted in the funk tradition and they don't let you forget it. Whether it be the funky basslines inspiring memories of Parliament or the intricate drum breaks to begin some of the tracks - you could really be excused for thinking you were back in the 70s.
The vocals by N'Dea Davenport, Siedah Garrett and Carleen Anderson are just awe-inspiring. All three ladies can move from singing very high-pitched right down to the kind of voice you associate with smoky bars - and they can do this on a dime. The music is even better. An album made for parties, you'll be dancing and happy!

George Benson And Jack Mcduff - Remastered (2007)

A double-length package of organ/guitar greatness and a set that features key 60's work by Hammond hero Jack McDuff and guitarist George Benson! First up is The New Boss Guitar Of George Benson - the first album ever cut by Benson as a leader, a cooker of a soul jazz set, recorded back when George was the guitarist in Jack McDuff's classic 60's quartet! The album's almost a McDuff Quartet one since Jack's on Hammond and Red Holloway is on tenor but the group's slightly different too, with the surprising additions of Montego Joe on drums, and Ronnie Boykins on bass! Benson's guitar is amazing throughout, sharp-edged and played with a tightness that's quite different than most of his later work and titles include "Shadow Dancers", "The Sweet Alice Blues", "Just Another Sunday", "Easy Living", and "Rock A Bye". Next up is Hot Barbeque one of our all-time favorite albums from Brother Jack McDuff! The combo here is great with a young George Benson hard-wailing on guitar, cutting lines so fast and furious it's hard to believe especially if you only know his later work. The legendary Joe Dukes is on drums dancing all over the place under Brother Jack's great groovy solos and Red Holloway completes the group on tenor sax! The title track's got a rare vocal refrain with Jack shouting out "Hot Barbeque" over the organ and other cuts include "Briar Patch", "Hippy Dip", "601 1/2 North Poplar", and "The Three Day Thang". Try this and dance too!

Can You Dig It ? Thrillin' Rare Grooves From Jazz To Soul 'N' Brazil To Boogaloo (2007)

We can definitely dig it, especially since the music on the set is all pretty darn groovy! The package is one of the best in the Brown Sugar series of compilations, and it's got a really tight sort of approach, a mixture of shortish tracks in jazz, Latin, soul, and funk styles, spun out as a really extended collection, one that changes sounds quickly from track to track as the excitement builds! There's a feel here that reminds us of some of the Ace Mod Jazz titles, but with a bit more soul and boogaloo thrown into the mix too and the collection features loads of great tracks that include "Muscle Soul" by Phil Upchurch, "New York Soul" by Ray Barretto, "Up & At It" by Cannonball Adderley, "Grits & Gravy" by Eric Kloss, "Jogo Da Vida" by Tamba Trio, "Fried Bananas" by Benny Golson, "O Jornaleiro" by Toni Tornado, "Spanish Rice" by Clark Terry & Chico O'Farrill, "Gimme Some Love" by Joe Cuba, "Swamp People" by Pucho & The Latin Soul Brothers, "The Houston Express" by Houston Person, "Itch & Scratch" by Rufus Thomas, "Feeling Good" by Andy Bey & The Bey Sisters, "Uhuru" by Ramsey Lewis, "Afro Texas" by Letta Mbulu, and "We Got More Soul" by The Pazant Brothers. Enjoy it and dance!

De La Soul - The Platinum Collection (2007)

This is undeniably one of the most important group ever in hip hop. The Platinum Collection is great and the music sounds even fresher than ever! All the cuts are here "Me, Myself & I", "Say No Go", Buddy and soooooo much more!

Pulp Fusion - The Harder They Come - Vol 7

Mais um volume da série Pulp Fusion, The Harder They Come, o número 7. Confira!
The Pulp Fusion series makes a funky move towards the dancefloor, shifting from its earlier blend of older funk and jazz tunes into a more club-styled set that features some wonderful boogie groovers! The grooves here are often very open and rhythmically progressive, not your usual mainstream funk, although some of the cuts are certainly by familiar artists and more in the mode of the looser rhythms and complicated changes that were sometimes ignored back in the day, but which have come to be classics many generations later! Original 70's Ghetto Jazz & Funk Classics!
01. Funkadelic - A Joyful Process
02. George Benson - Dance

Emilio Santiago - Primeiro disco

Baixe e Dance!
One of the Brazilian funk classics of the 70s the debut album of soulful singer Emilio Santiago and Santiago's vocals are tremendous, equally at home with a hip grooving soul tune as they are with some of the album's mellower, jazzier tracks. Guest artists on the set include Brazilian jazz Joao Donato, Azymuth, and Wilson das Neves and the album includes the funky breaking classic "Bananeira", an amazing version of a song written by Donato and Gilberto Gil, served up by Santiago in a version that's easily the best ever! Other tracks include a great version of Jorge Ben's "Brother", plus "Quero Alegria", "Depois", "Doa a Quem Doer", and "La Mulata", a Latin groover by Marcos Valle, enjoy it!

Nina Simone - Remixed & Reimagined

The music of the late great Nina Simone is revisited on "Remixed & Reimagined". Unlike remix albums of Blondie (1995's "Remixed Remade Remodeled") and Shirley Bassey (2001's "The Remix Album...Diamonds Are Forever"), "Remixed & Reimagined" features remixes of 13 separate songs, with no repeats. Also unlike those remix albums, this one does not have any house/club/dance remixes (altho' "To Love Somebody" is a funky up-tempo neo-Motown/Phil Spector's Wall of Sound style remix); most of the remixes are similar to (but not as good as) Joe Cladussell's remix of Nina Simone's "Feelin' Good", found on the first "Verve/Remixed" album; the sound/style is called "Chill House or Lounge" on the back of the album.

Larry Graham and Graham Central Station - My Radio Sure Sounds Good To Me (1978)

What a Shame my friend!!

A funky female duo from the P-Funk empire. One of George Clinton's few girl-based projects of the 70s. Vocals are by the duo of Lyn Mabry and Dawn Silva. But the main sound of the set comes from the tightly crafted rhythms served up by a cast of well-known P-Funk regulars.
